Interactive Art - custom built from wood
I create these pieces from my original paintings and designs. The outer frames are available in a variety of common and exotic hardwoods and are dovetail joined. Each design is available in standard size (with 4"x4" squares) or small size (with 2"x2" squares). You can rotate each section with the touch of a finger to reveal a new part of the design while still maintaining connection and consistency with all sections around it. There are literally millions of possible ways to rearrange these art pieces. A 16 square design has 43,046,721 combinations! They can hang on the wall or stand on a surface. A great conversation piece, these art works will be a great addition to your home. Choose from one of my existing designs of commission a custom set of paintings.
How did I come up with this? The product has evolved through many forms since its beginning. I frequently make abstract triptychs where the image in the paintings continues across all three canvases. Back in 1998 I had a friend ask me a simple question, "Wouldn't it be cool if you could change the order of the pieces and still have it connect?" After thinking about it for a while I was able to come up with square canvases that could be arranged in any orientation with any side of any piece being next to each other while still maintaining image continuity.
After making a few of these paintings I realized that there needed to be an easier way to switch the pieces around. I started painting on thick canvases which I could paint on the sides and which could be stacked in any direction. This was an improvement to the idea but still lacked the refinement I was seeking and the ease of switching the pieces. It also caused wear on the paintings after a while.
I set the project aside for a while and continued with my abstract oils. From time to time I would think about different mechanisms for displaying my interactive pieces but nothing really seemed to be ideal. Then out of the blue many years later it occurred to me that the pieces needed to rotate. I quickly sketched out a design and set about the process of trying to make it a reality.
After a winter of experimenting with different materials and tools I had my first hand-made prototypes. I set about creating a large body of original works with my abstract style. In an effort to connect with a larger audience I expanded my styles into geometric designs, realism, and also photography. I have been showing my work at outdoor arts and craft festivals and have won many awards for my work. I continue to sell many of my original works and have a list of new ideas that still need to be made a reality.
